Durango reports nearly 11,000 people treated for conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the membrane covering the eyelids and the white part of the eye called the conjunctiva, and is treated depending on the cause.

This year, the Durango Health Department has treated 10,968 people with the disease.

According to official statistics, there are 4,960 males and 6,008 females.

In the country, 598,367 people require medical care for conjunctivitis.

Among those receiving treatment, 271,152 were men and 327,215 were women.

Conjunctivitis may be allergic (when it goes away on its own), or bacterial (when antibiotic medications are needed).

The most common symptoms are redness in the whites of the eyes, increased tearing, white, yellow, or green discharge, itching, burning sensation, increased sensitivity to light, and a feeling of sand in the eyes.

For experts from the health sector, an effective way to avoid conjunctivitis is to maintain hygiene and take actions such as not touching your eyes or wearing contact lenses without washing your hands properly.

Likewise, it is recommended not to share personal items such as makeup, towels, or tissues, to change pillowcases frequently, and to replace eye makeup regularly.
