NBC has canceled two of its most recent sitcoms, including Young Rock, produced by Dwayne Johnson. In addition to serving as executive producer and co-producer, Johnson also narrated the series and made a cameo appearance as a future version of himself running for president in 2032. However, the show was based mostly on Johnson’s life from age 10 to 14. (Adrien Groulx), 15 to 17 (Bradley Constant) and 18 to 26 (Uli Latukefu). The Hollywood Reporter reports that NBC has made decisions about some of its TV series, canceling the sitcoms Grand Crew at the end of season two and Young Rock at the end of season three. Behind this decision may have been a failure to negotiate between AMPTP and the WGA, which resulted in a writers’ strike and an indefinite suspension of the show. Young Rock suffered a sharp decline in ratings during its third season, continuing a difficult streak for Johnson that includes the unsatisfactory performance of the 2022 film Black Adams at the box office.
However, despite this string of canceled or less exciting projects, including Black Adams 2, it shouldn’t be difficult for Johnson to climb back to the top of popularity. The career of the former wrestler has been one of ups and downs. He has several projects in various stages of development, at least some of which have the potential to rebuild his reputation and attract a larger audience.
Johnson’s next project is the holiday action comedy Red One, due out this year. The film is a fresh take on the holiday mythology starring JK Simmons as Santa Claus, and also stars Chris Evans, Kiernan Shipka, and Lucy Liu. Whether or not the film will be successful remains to be seen, especially as it’s Evans’ first big film since Pixar’s Lightyear flopped last summer.
While Young Rock Johnson’s string of failures may not be over, the actor still has two big projects lined up that could get him back on track. He will star in and produce a live-action remake of Moana, reprising his original role as the Maui demi-god, and will do the same for a new Fast & Furious spin-off, years of conflict with producers After a surprise return and star from the film Vin Diesel. Given that Disney’s live-action movies are becoming more and more frequent box office hits, this might be the one that puts it over the top.
