Elizabeth II Cancels All Public Celebrations for Her Birthday

Queen Elizabeth II.

For the second consecutive year, although for different reasons, Queen Elizabeth II has canceled any public celebration related to her birthday, this Wednesday, April 21. If in 2020 the sovereign considered it inappropriate to celebrate her anniversary due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, with the entire United Kingdom plunged into a period of strict confinement, on this occasion the monarch has suspended any event or official gesture due to the recent death of her husband, Philip of Edinburgh, whose funeral was held last Saturday at Windsor Castle.

In this way, the Ministry of Defense has confirmed that no cannon salutes will be launched from the Tower of London and also central Hyde Park, as is traditional before such an important occasion, at the express wish of the head of state, who officially follows mourning after the Duke’s death. Also, plans to reveal a new portrait of Elizabeth II to mark her 95 years of life have been directly suspended and moved to a later date, as reported by the Daily Mail newspaper.

According to sources around Buckingham Palace, the sovereign will limit herself to gathering her closest relatives for a private lunch that will take place this Wednesday at Windsor Castle, where the queen has been held since the beginning of the pandemic. Therefore, the only public celebration that will take place that day will have as a stage the profiles of the monarchy in the different social networks, which are expected to be updated with congratulations and images of the royal birthday girl.
