The Elon Musk commencement speech a few years ago in the University of Southern California (USC) offers a treasure trove of advice for new business leaders that can be applied across industries, according to an article in jeff steen published in inc.

For Steen, there is one key piece of advice that is relevant to everyone:

Improve focus by focusing on the signal, not the noise. “Many companies get confused. They spend money on things that don’t really improve the product.”.

The article highlights two key points that Steen argues are worth delving into.

First of all, the “product”. “From writing update emails to crafting an investor pitch, ask yourself: What is the best version of this? What is the result I want? Then work backwards, building steps that allow you to improve your ‘product,'” says the Inc.

Second, Steen calls differentiate signals from noise. “The signs are those events, comments, experiences and observations that can improve you, your employees, your product or your company in general. Noise is what we confusedly identify as a signal, but in reality it is nothing more than the pressure to follow the crowd or comply with the demands of others”, he says.

For the author, the signal brings the achievement of the objectives closer, while the noise moves away or stops people in the way.

“To avoid getting lost in a sea of noise, ask yourself before making a decision, taking an action, or expressing a thought or opinion: Does this bring me closer to or align with my goal(s)?Steen says.

The note acknowledges that finding the line between noise and signal can be difficult. Therefore, he says, it is important have friends, colleagues and trusted advisors to consult. “If you are not sure of the impact certain actions or words will have, go to those who understand your goals and can offer you some objectivity”, states the text.

For Steen, this lines up perfectly with another of Musk’s exhortations, delivered during his commencement address: “It attracts great people… [personas] that you really respect”.

“It really is that simple. Identify the right signals and the best people and success will be totally achievable.”, concludes the article.
