After the premieres of Poor Little Things at the Venice and Telluride Film Festivals, I wrote about how quickly Emma Stone boosted our chances of winning the Best Actress Oscar. But sooner than I expected, Stone took the lead. Will she be heading towards her second career trophy seven years after winning La La Land? Scroll down to see our graph illustrating the state of the race. Click on this chart to see more recent data on the top eight Oscar categories.
Back on August 31, Stone finished eighth in the Best Actress race, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. Bad Things then premiered in Venice on September 1 and Telluride on September 2. By September 4th, Stone had made it into our top five. On September 6, she moved up to second place. And as of September 8, she was in the lead, overtaking Barrino fantasy (“The color purple”).
Barrineau was always a vulnerable favorite in our odds as her film had yet to be screened to critics or audiences. Our assessment of her so far is based on the trailer and the fact that two women (LaChanze And Cynthia Erivo) won a Tony Award on stage for Barrino’s role as Celie in the film. Whoopi Goldberg also won an Oscar for his role as Celie in Steven Spielbergnon-musical version from 1985. It was certainly a role with a legendary history of awards.
But now film journalists and festival-goers have seen Stone’s entire performance, and the reviews have been outstanding. It is now supported by seven expert journalists, three Gold Derby editors, 12 of our Top 24 users and nine of our Top 24 stars. Of course, Barrino could flip the script again when we finally see The Color Purple, but for now Stone is sitting in the cat’s seat.
