Epidemiological alert on trichinellosis outbreak in Kawi

An epidemiological alert was issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agricultural Development of the province after a suspected case of trichinellosis was detected in the interior of Buenos Aires. So far, 29 exposed persons have been reported, 15 of whom developed symptoms; from the municipalities of Adolfo Alsina and Saliclo, the food involved was bacon and dried sausages.

Samples of both products tested positive for Trichinella spiralis upon analysis by the complaining laboratory. The sausages come from the “AGROINDUSTRIA LOS ANDRES SRL” factory in Saliclo, CUIT 30-71205283-3 with the “Don Andrés” label RPE No. 122-5 PAMS Exp. No. 22500-39417/salami Seventeen species were found in sausages.

According to preliminary information, the food products were distributed in the municipalities of Daireaux, Hipólito Yrigoyen, Coronel Suárez, Saavedra, Tres Lomas, Trenque Lauquen, Puan, Rivadavia and Adolfo Alsina. Faced with this situation, the health working group was asked to strengthen the epidemiological surveillance of the cases of trichinellosis in the cities involved, and urged the health secretariats and food science offices in these areas to continue their investigations.

At the same time, it is recommended that people in the area take preventive measures and seek medical treatment in time when symptoms appear. A “suspect case” of trichinellosis is defined as a person with a history of consumption of pork or wild meat and its derivatives within 45 days prior to the onset of symptoms, and who presents with fever and one or more of the following symptoms: Facial edema and/or periorbital , myalgia, bilateral meibomian conjunctivitis and/or diarrhea, eosinophilia and/or elevated muscle enzymes (LDH, CPK, etc.).

Trichinellosis or trichinellosis is a parasitic disease caused by larval and adult parasites of the nematode Trichinella genus, affecting humans, domestic and wild mammals, birds and reptiles. It is a zoonotic disease that is accidentally transmitted to humans through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat or meat derivatives that contain viable muscle larvae.

In the province of Buenos Aires, trichinellosis outbreaks mostly occurred in the low temperature season, and the temporal distribution of historical cases showed an increase between July and October.
