Borrell spoke at the opening of the eighth Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, held in Barcelona, Spain, which he co-chaired with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.
Referring to Israel’s new decision to allocate funds to increase illegal settlements, Borrell condemned this situation.
Borrell used the following phrases in his message shared on social media platform X after his speech:
“I was horrified to learn that in the middle of the war, Israel would allocate new funds to build more illegal settlements. This is not self-defense. It will not make Israel safer. The settlements are a serious violation of international human rights. Israel’s greatest security responsibility.”
Borrell said in his speech to the meeting: “There will be no peace and security for Israel without a Palestinian state.” He made his assessment.
Borrell recalled that Israel is also a member of the Union for the Mediterranean, and expressed his regret for not attending today’s meeting.
