“Everywhere you looked, there was a famous person.”

David Beckham recalled Tom Cruise and Will Smith inviting him to a star-studded party when he moved to Los Angeles in 2007.

The 48-year-old moved with his wife Victoria, 49, and their young children to California after signing with LA Galaxy.

The US went crazy over Beckham’s arrival 16 years ago as he changed the face of the game in the US.

During his new Netflix documentary Beckham, director Fisher Stevens asked David, “Did you have friends in Los Angeles?”

David replied: “The funny thing is that I was friends with Tom Cruise. I remember Tom turning around and saying, “Will and I are throwing you a party.” I’m like, “Will?” and he said, “Will Smith.”

Several Hollywood stars attended the party, including Tom’s wife Katie Holmes, Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith and actor Jim Carrey.

Recalling the party, David’s close friend David Gardner said: “It was like going to Madame Tussauds: everywhere you looked there was a famous person.”

He added: “The next minute the piano started playing and Stevie Wonder started singing happy birthday to him.” And I thought, “Screw this, he’s gone, we’ve lost him.”

The party took place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, where Tom cleared the dance floor to recreate the choreography from his 1983 film Risky Business.

When David went to Los Angeles in 2007, he feared a new era of soccer was coming to the United States.

He had just left Real Madrid after four years and was also a symbol for Manchester United and the England national team.
