Expert warns: Sleeping this way can cause wrinkles

The way you sleep and its effect on your face has become a hot topic of discussion on social media. In a video that went viral on TikTok, American beauty influencer Marianne claimed that her irregular lip shape was due to sleeping on her side.

The post has been viewed nearly 15 million times and received nearly 7,000 comments.

Confirming this claim, clinical facialist Kate Kerr says the way you sleep can cause wrinkles, affect your face and décolletage, and even change the shape of your lips.

According to a study in the Journal of Plastic Surgery, the enormous pressure, tension, and compressive forces that the face is exposed to during sleep can cause facial deformities.

This deformity manifests itself in the form of vertical folds and wrinkles when sleeping on the side or stomach.

These vertical folds may start out as temporary sleep wrinkles, usually along the lines running from the nose to the corners of the lips, but over time they can become permanent as the skin ages and loses its ability to bounce back.

The same applies to other places on the body where the effects of gravity play a role. “Sleeping on your side can cause your breasts to sag, which may create visible vertical lines in your cleavage,” Kerr says.

Otherwise, he added, it is unlikely to have a significant effect on the symmetry of the eyes and lips.
