Experts offer advice on exposure to Saharan dust

Although Saharan dust is not harmful, people with chronic respiratory or allergic conditions should be more careful.

As Saharan dust reaches the state of Bolivar, pulmonologist and internist Doris Odreman advises on exposure to this meteorological phenomenon.

According to the forecast of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh), a small amount of Saharan dust will appear in the northern part of Bolivar state and the central plains on Tuesday (October 10), but from Monday to Wednesday, the 11th, it will be active in the coastal areas of Venezuela and Caribbean Sea.

Through these winds, particles are dragged along, which in turn contain very small minerals that are usually invisible to the naked eye. It’s not harmful, Alderman said, but warned to take care of people who are more susceptible to chronic upper respiratory conditions: allergic rhinitis, sinusitis or certain nasal obstructive diseases.

In addition to patients with lung cancer, patients with chronic diseases include those with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smokers (ex-smokers), or those who have developed the disease due to other exposures.

People with allergies should be even more careful. Oldman stresses that when unprotected hauling exposes particles to dust, one of the first things that can occur is allergic conjunctivitis, which manifests as redness, discharge, tearing and a feeling of eczema (itching) .

It emphasizes that patients with these chronic diseases should seek immediate rescue treatment or consult a doctor.

Advice on Saharan Dust

Although there are other more severely affected areas, such as the country’s coast, Odreman recommends protecting your eyes with glasses, wearing a mask and keeping doors and windows in your home closed.

The expert concluded that children should be protected as they are more likely to develop symptoms through exposure, which is why she recommended protecting them as much as possible.
