Tennis fans highlight Novak Djokovic’s efforts to win Olympic gold while Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou controversially claims Grand Slam Ranked much higher in a player’s career.
Mouratoglou, who coached four-time Olympic gold medalist Williams from 2012 to 2022, said recently that tennis and the Olympics don’t have the same history as other sports like swimming. He deduced that racquet sports withdrew from the coveted event in 1924, only to be reintroduced in 1988 after 64 years.
“There is no real connection between tennis and the Olympics. Tennis was in the Olympics, then out, and finally reintroduced. So, no history,” he wrote on Instagram.
“I’m not an expert in swimming, but I feel like the European Championships, the World Championships, the Olympics and all the other events are just preparation for those events,” Mouratoglou added.
Mouratoglou said that some tennis players do not attach importance to Olympic tennis events, but put Grand Slam events first.
“A lot of tennis players don’t feel like this is such an important event,” said Serena Williams’ former coach. “They think the Grand Slams are 100 times more important.”
“For most players, winning a Grand Slam would be the highest possible achievement,” he further said.
Patrick Mouratoglou’s views were not popular with the tennis community and he received a backlash for them.
One fan commented on X: “One of the few criticisms I have of Serena Williams is that she makes this guy make sense.”
Some tennis fans were disgusted by his idea while underscoring Novak Djokovic’s desire for Olympic gold.
Some also recalled that the Golden Slam-seeking Serbian, who won the first three Grand Slams in 2021, competed in singles and mixed doubles at the Tokyo Olympics, and clearly showed some performance in winning for his country. Too much. Fans believe Djokovic in turn ruined his chances of winning a medal and dashed his calendar Grand Slam hopes.
“Novak Djokovic is so obsessed…he missed his chance at a Grand Slam at the Olympics,” one fan said.
Here are more reactions from tennis fans:
