Fast 5 is surprisingly accurate, according to an urban combat expert.

Retired former US Army officer and urban warfare expert, John Spencer analyzes the astonishing accuracy of the ambush depicted in Fast Five. During the Fast Five’s final act, Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and his men are surprised by soldiers of drug lord Hernán Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida). After being captured by Hobbs, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) help Hobbs set up an ambush.

In the insider video, Spencer describes the realistic accuracy of the ambush in Fast Five, saying that it has a certain degree of realism. Spencer, who begins his analysis of Fast Five at 8:35, states that although some of the characters’ actions were unrealistic, the ambush itself felt real. Here’s the full transcript of Spencer’s analysis:

“This happened to me in Iraq. The ambush was launched by an RPG. Ambush attacks are very common in urban warfare. They are designed to take people by surprise and lure them into such traps. Although the bad guys don’t usually live on the roof.”

“You don’t retaliate by standing on the road. You will not be able to last long. We want cover, we use those armored vehicles, which is great. However, ideally, in the full situation, this ambush is called the ‘kill zone’. You want to get out of this.”

“The concept of being… we call it the rapid reaction force. a support team. Because you were surprised, someone has to come and help you. And we usually keep the forces in their uniforms ready to intervene in such an urban environment, to be a quick reaction force to the rescue.

“They attack with a vehicle, which is very common! They try to trap them in that killing zone so they all can shoot at you. So I would give it a higher rating than I expected, because the ambush is very real.

The precision of Fast Five’s urban combat is surprising, given that the series is famous for over-the-top action sequences that sometimes seem to defy the laws of reality. Fast Five is the same Fast and Furious movie in which Dom and his family drag Hernan’s massive vault around town with cables tied to the back of their cars. Given how often realism is sacrificed in the Fast & Furious franchise, it’s surprising to know that Fast Five managed to keep so much in the ambush scene.

Fast Five ends with Hobbs killing Hernan in revenge for the deaths of his men in the ambush. However, this decision will prove dangerous in FAST X, when Hernan’s son Dante Reyes (JASON MOMOA) will use all resources to seek revenge on Dom and his family. In the end credits scene of Fast X, Dante focuses on Hobbs, setting the stage for a Hobbs-centric film that would be the sequel to Fast X.

Considering Fast Five is a major reason the Fast & Furious saga will be concluded, it’s interesting to note how precise the ambush scene was despite the series’ hype. With Fast & Furious 11 coming out in 2025, there will be an even greater gap between the modern movies and Fast Five than ever before. However, the Fast Five still remains an important part of the Fast & Furious franchise, defining how the saga will end.
