Fast X smashes another milestone at the box office (but is it enough?)

The box office collection of the film Fast X is increasing day by day, but the domestic performance of the film is not desired. Directed by Louis Leterrier, Fast X is the eleventh installment in the long-running Fast & Furious saga, following Vin Diesel’s Dom as he goes up against Jason Momoa’s Dante to protect his family. The film has received mixed reviews from critics and is expected to be the first part of the planned conclusion of the series.

According to Collider, Fast X’s worldwide box office has crossed $700 million and currently stands at $703 million. While the film has performed relatively well internationally, earning just under $560 million to date, Fast X disappointed domestically, earning only $144 million. By comparison, F9: The Fast Saga grossed $726 million worldwide, including $173 million domestically and $553 million overseas. Fast X is now set to lag behind its predecessor’s domestic total, but could make up for it with strong international numbers.

What does the Fast X box office mean for the future of Fast & Furious?

Fast X’s opening weekend registered significantly lower numbers than the saga’s heyday. However, despite the initial concerns raised by these figures, the sequel was ultimately moderately successful internationally, especially in China, where relatively few Hollywood films are allowed to be released. While international performance continues to be strong, FastX’s domestic performance was somewhat disappointing.

Fast & Furious 11 is now guaranteed, but Diesel has also hinted that there could be a twelfth film on the way. This comes on top of Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs spin-off film, which made a surprise appearance in Fast X’s mid-credits scene. Given how heavily the latest film was billed as “the beginning of the end” of some sort, it still feels like there’s still a lot to be expected from Fast & Furious. However, Fast X’s box office showing suggests that, at least domestically, interest in the saga is waning.

After so many years and so many movies, it seems like the right time to end the Fast saga. But continuing to spawn too many spin-offs and sequels risks making the Fast & Furious saga’s grand conclusion feel more like a whimper than a bang, with Dom and his crew overstaying their welcome. Whether or not Fast X’s average box office numbers will affect plans for future movies remains to be seen, but it certainly raises some questions about how much fuel is left in the saga’s tank.
