More than 145 sea lions have been confirmed to have died from bird flu in Argentina, with a rise in cases in the provinces a growing concern.
Tierra del Fuego, Santa Cruz, Chubut, Rionegro and Buenos Aires towns Mar del Plata, Necochea, Monte Hermoso, Villa Gesell, Rosales Colonel and Villarino’s mammals died from the H5N1 variant A virus.
Experts insist it is a “highly pathogenic” variant of the virus, despite signs that the number of infected animals will decrease.
Furthermore, they point out, “never before has such a large-scale transfer of effects been seen” from birds to mammals.
Faced with this alarming situation, authorities have decided to close several of the country’s beaches to prevent possible infection of humans and pets.
What to do if a person has been exposed to sea lions
Experts confirmed that there was a risk of transmission from mammals to humans, although the probability was low, but they announced the measures they would take.
First, they are asking people and their pets not to come near beaches where dead or affected animals have been confirmed.
However, if someone has been in contact with the mammal, it is worth noting the date in case symptoms such as fever, weakness, muscle pain or respiratory distress lead to a trip to the hospital and a warning.
