Also Francis Ford Coppola think about the Roman Empire. Recently, the director, in a humorous manner, took part in another eccentric trend which is going viral on TikTok and revolves around the question: “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?”.
Curiosity is associated with inequality between men and women in response: the famous Gen Z social network is actually filled with videos of girls asking questions to their husbands or boyfriends, who admit that they think about it quite often, even several times a day, with a frequency that their dates find funny.
And, apparently, also the director Godfather AND The apocalypse has arrived is no exception: Coppola even revealed it connection between the viral trend and his next film project. On his social media profiles he wrote: “How many times do I think about Ancient Rome? Often. The Roman Republic was an example for my country, America, and its institutions, and also inspired my next film, Metropolis.
The plot of the film is still shrouded in mystery, but judging by what has become known so far, it will be a story of political ambitions, genius and controversial love against the background a utopian version of New York called New Rome. Thus, the reference to Rome and the Roman Empire is one of the main themes, along with the problem of modernity being unable to resolve its own conflicts, which inevitably marks its downfall.
Francis Ford Coppola added: “My fascination with the Roman Republic stems from the disputes between different political parties. During this period, the interests of the Republic were subordinated to the ambitions of a small group of very powerful men who made political ideals their own in order to increase their economic fortunes and their prestige using the power of armed militias. This dealt the final blow to an already shaky system.”
Megapolisbased on an original idea by Francis Ford Coppola, will arrive in 2024 and will feature an ensemble of big stars, including Adam Driver, Shia LaBeouf, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter AND James Remar.
