From Huancayo to Spain’s top doctor: News from Peruvian women leading global campaign against pneumonia

Katia born in province Huancayo, a place that evokes joy and pride. His fascination with science began in chemistry and biology classes at school.

He subsequently studied at Gonzaga National University in San Luis, Ica, where he immersed himself in biologyhis career ended with distinction.

His talent did not go unnoticed. She was invited by the Catalan university to work as a pneumonia researcher. His most notable contributions to date have been in the study of etiology and epidemiology, exploring new diagnostic methods to transform the understanding of this disease.

“I decided to dedicate my entire career to this”Catia says her commitment determined her involvement in the development of clinical guidelines for the management of pneumonia in Spain.

Their concerns are obvious, as pneumonia is one of the most common respiratory infections in the population and one of the leading causes of hospitalization in children and adults worldwide.

“A dream come true”

Their foundation is ironclad: their parents. She gratefully remembers the hard work they put in to provide her four children with professional training and left in her a never-give-up attitude towards life.

“Ever since I was very young, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor, and my dream will definitely come true,” she emphasizes with passion and conviction.

However, in order to achieve her goals, she faces the challenge of leaving her family and adapting to a new culture.

“It wasn’t a very difficult transition because I always wanted to study abroad and learn about new cultures, but the most painful thing is leaving the people you love,” he added.

His passion lies not only in helping those affected by pneumonia, but also in helping physicians, who he guides through research into the best management of the disease.

One of her most rewarding experiences was in 2019 when she was recognized as a Fellow of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).

This distinction recognizes excellence in research, education and clinical leadership in the field of respiratory medicine by some ERS members.

A few years ago she was awarded the University of Barcelona’s Special Doctoral Award for the academic year 2011/2012. The award recognizes the quality of some of these papers, in their case achieving “Phi Beta Kappa” status.

Additionally, she is deeply proud of the founding of the Pneumonia Family and Patient Support and Information Society.

“I hope my work goes beyond the laboratory and the classroom. The global pneumonia awareness campaign reflects my commitment to prevention, especially for vulnerable populations,” he tells us in strikingly simple terms.

Her life is filled with constant commitments, showing how skillfully she balances the complexities of her role, between research projects, university and the demanding job of being a mother of twins.

Throughout his career, he has received guidance and support from colleagues to stay abreast of the latest trends in respiratory diseases through extensive reading of research articles. His commitment to cutting-edge medical research is reflected in his conference attendance and speaker role.

“It allows me to collaborate within a wider research group and contribute to new clinical guidelines. Now I have a broader perspective as a researcher, and the more colleagues and meetings I have, the more Being able to connect with more people and work on interesting projects,” she comments.

She currently leads global awareness campaigns on pneumonia and since 2017 is an associate professor at the University of Barcelona, ​​where she encourages interaction between students of different nationalities.

Dr Silonis coordinates one of the largest pneumonia patient bases in Europe. He has published more than 80 indexed scientific articles and participated in various clinical trials.
