The murder of Gaby Petito, a case that shocked the United States
Petito and Laundrie were on a tour of the country. In July, they went aboard a van on a trip through reserves and national parks in the American West. The journey was followed by the young influencer through her social networks and there she portrayed a dream world.
However, the reality was different. On September 1, Laundrie returned in the vehicle alone, without his girlfriend, to the family home in Florida, where the couple also resided. After several days without news of Petito, his family reported the disappearance on September 11 and then the authorities turned to a nationwide search.
Laundrie was initially questioned by the police, but both he and his family refused to cooperate with the investigation. The young man then disappeared from the places he used to frequent and became the prime suspect in the crime.
On September 17, Petito’s boyfriend was reported missing, after his parents said he went for a walk on September 13 and never returned home.
Laundrie had been missing ever since, days before Wyoming authorities found the remains of his fiancee, Gabby Petito, whose death was ruled manslaughter by strangulation.
Laundrie’s body was finally found on October 20 and the results of the autopsy were awaited.
The young man had been a fugitive from justice in a case for alleged fraud for the use of young Petito’s bank cards after his disappearance.
According to the Wyoming coroners, Petito died of a homicide when she was strangled about a month before her body was found on September 19 after disappearing since the end of August.
