Galicia’s largest corona outbreak this year has hospitalized more than 230 people, including 71 in CHUAC in A Coruña

A wave of coronavirus is affecting Galicia and Spain due to increased social mobility during the festive season.

More than 2,200 people have tested positive, official SERGAS figures show. The country has not backed that amount since December.

It must be taken into account that the actual number of positives among Galicians is much higher. As happened in the last phase of the epidemic, Sanidade only tests symptomatic and vulnerable people (Chronic patients, the elderly, etc.).

Given that the virus is now much less virulent and almost everyone has been vaccinated in varying doses, is the situation really worrying?

Six Galicians join UCI

the numbers Hospitalization Correlations with intensive care patients are modest, although they are significant. A total of six Galicians are in intensive care and 236 are hospitalized.

While these are numbers that SERGAS can handle, they are not negligible numbers.Hospitals in places like Santiago, A Coruña, Ferrol and Ourense must take care of more than 30 coronavirus patients, a heavy burden during the August holidays when Xunta closed hundreds of beds.Corona patients occupy more than 70 beds in A Coruña

between ICU and conventional beds.

It must be taken into account that the actual number of hospitalizations is higher, since SERGAS has not included data on hospitalizations in private centers in its totals since the beginning of July.

death toll

The same happens with death. These numbers cannot be ignored, but have nothing to do with the pandemic.

So far this year, 189 Galicians have died from the virus, a figure that peaked in January, when five people died that day. The average number of deaths per month is about 30.

It must be noted that the death figures published by SERGAS still do not include deaths from the most recent wave of infections that began at the end of July. They are expected to increase in the coming days.

Also remember that they are dying from the coronavirus, not the coronavirus. For years, authorities have not counted the number of deaths for which doctors did not believe the virus was the leading cause, and there has always been a nuance of subjectivity.

The weekly graph of deaths since the start of the pandemic allows us to understand how the coronavirus is spreading in Galicia. This year, 1 or 2 Galicians die from the coronavirus every dayis nothing compared to the 30+ deaths we endured every day before vaccines and milder variants.

state level situation

The cumulative incidence of COVID-19 in Spain has rebounded in recent weeks, with primary care cases up 36% in the last week at the end of July compared to the previous week, according to the Carlos III Health Institute..

Health authorities have warned that a new vaccination campaign against COVID-19 may be launched in the fall, given the increased incidence. The campaign will focus on older adults and those at high risk of serious illness.

It’s important to remember that COVID-19 remains a dangerous virus that can cause serious illness even in people who are vaccinated. It is important to follow precautionary measures, especially in vulnerable settings.

Health authorities recommend the following precautions:

  • Wear masks in confined spaces and environments with many people.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Keep social distance.
  • Avoid social gatherings with multiple people.
  • If you have symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home and get tested.

If you are vaccinated, you are less likely to get COVID-19 and get seriously ill. However, infection is still possible, so it is important to take precautions.

Currently the main variants of COVID-19 in Spain are Omicron types, such as BA.2 and BA.4.They are more transmissible than the first strain, but less harmful

The symptoms of COVID-19 caused by the BA.2 and BA.4 variants may be similar to those caused by the original omicron variant. The most common symptoms include:

  • cough
  • fever
  • fatigue
  • stuffy nose
  • sore throat
  • Headache
  • loss of smell
  • loss of taste
  • diarrhea
  • Muscle pain
  • joint pain
  • Difficulty breathing

In some cases, the BA.2 and BA.4 variants may cause more severe symptoms, such as pneumonia.
