At least seven people died and nine were seriously injured on saturday when a wall of rocks collapsed about motor boats under a waterfall in southeastern Brazil, reported the local fire department. There is also three missing persons.
A series of videos posted on social media shows the exact moment when the rock column crashed into the water. As you can hear in a video shared by the president Jair Bolsonaro, from a further boat, a group of tourists tried to warn the boats that were closer to the crash site. “Get out of there,” they repeated.
“Many stones are falling!” a woman said in another of the videos. “That block is coming off!” a man commented, already in a tone of despair. Then when they noticed another movement in the rock, people started yelling for the boats that were near the canyon to move away. Due to the distance, they were not heard. “That piece over there will fall off! Get out of there! ”, they insisted.
In the last seconds of the video you can see from a new angle the fall of the gigantic stone slab into the water, and the impact it causes, which covers everything. At least one of the boats hit was completely sunk, and others escaped at high speed.
The rock tower suddenly dislodged from the canyon wall and collapsed onto at least three pleasure boats, sending a huge wave over Lake Capitolio, in the state of Minas Gerais.
Authorities said there are still three missing, for which there are divers working in the place. Previously, they had reported that the wanted people were 20, but they have already managed to contact the rest by phone.
Those injured in the accident had broken bones and one of them was in serious condition at the hospital, with injuries to his head and face. Another 23 people were treated for minor injuries, Firefighters spokesman Pedro Aihara told the press.
The region has seen heavy rains for two weeks, which could have loosened the rock face. The Brazilian newspaper O Tempo He specified that the Brazilian Navy will open an investigation to analyze the circumstances of the accident.
