Fashionable mothers-to-be are giving their babies traditionally masculine names like Michael, John and Charles, instead giving their boys-to-be names like Carmen, Hazel and Rose.

“Today’s parents are obsessed with sending the right messages with the names they choose,” Pamela Redmond, founder of Nameberry, a global site dedicated to nicknames, in a recent report on the baby naming trends expected to dominate in the new year.

“The ideal baby name for 2024 is one that is ahead of fashion, has personal meaning and defines personality,” Redmond added.

Researchers at Nameberry determined that baby girl names for boys will be in vogue among parents who embrace the annual calendar change, noting that celebrities such as John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, who crowned their little boy Ren Alexander in June, as well as Rihanna and A $AP Rocky, who named their latest addition Riot Rose in August, have already begun their gender celebration.

“It’s tempting to attribute this trend to society’s increasingly progressive views on gender identity, but it’s not the only reason parents are choosing feminine names for boys,” the report said. “Feminine names often appeal to boys for their symbolism, soft and sensitive image, or connection to the past.”

“All of these names are united by the principles of Barbie feminism: femininity can be feminist, strength is attractive, and individuality should be embraced,” say trend spotters Nameberry.

In 2023, nature, not gender, has become the main theme in baby names.

The list was dominated by wildlife-inspired names such as Daisy and Iris, both colors, as well as Leo, which means “lion” in Latin.

And in July, a Nameberry poll found that Azriel, Cohen, Dixie and Karen were among the most controversial baby names of the year.

“We polled our site visitors on their most controversial choices,” the spokesperson said in an eye-popping TikTok post. “These (names) were some of the most popular responses.”
