Goebbels and us – Opinion

The shadow of the propaganda minister of the Third Reich is among us. His principles, the ideas that he proposed, and the propaganda that came to deify a man in a nation that had lost its self-esteem, are in force in this media world, where a candidate is promoted with the same strategy with which a water heater is sold.

Goebbles was not an improvised person, the sequel of poliomyelitis that he suffered in childhood, prevented him from integrating to the games typical of that age. Became a lonely wolf inclined to read. Due to this limitation, he was prevented from enlisting to fight in the First World War, a circumstance that was not prevented from lying about his participation, claiming that the paralysis of his leg was a consequence of a wound received in combat. The lie was his best weapon.

Goebbels was the best student of his class, as well as a gifted pianist. In 1921 he obtained a doctorate in Germanic philology at the University of Heidelberg. FHe was a teacher, journalist and writer. In the year of his graduation, he wrote an extensive autobiographical novel called Michael, where his anti-Semitic indications are outlined. This and other novels and plays were rejected by the public, even in their moment of greatest power. His meager income forced him to seek a job as a bank clerk, a task he disliked. It barely lasted a few months.

LENIN OR HITLER

In 1925 he joined the NSDAP, the party that would become the Nazi, where he soon became editor of the party’s newspaper. It was then that he met Hitler, and was positively impacted by “ this man who has everything to be King. ” However, an ideological communion did not yet exist, because until then Goebbels had a marked tendency towards socialist ideas. speech he gave in Königsberg raised the dilemma: ‘Lenin or Hitler?’ ”

The future Führer he was interested in this little man, so prepared and read. In 1926 they met again and Goebbels has since pledged allegiance to this man whom he considered “ a political genius. ” From that moment on, Goebbels participated enthusiastically in the assembly of the party, which would lead Hitler to power in 1933. The rest is known. His loyalty was unshakable until the final moment, when, seeing that all was lost, he committed suicide with his wife (Magda richter), after killing her five children.

As Reich propaganda minister, at only 35 years old, Goebbels took it upon himself to generate an image of an unwavering and determined leader (although in Goebbels’ diary he frequently complained about the Führer). Little by little, all the German media came under the monolithic leadership of this little man, who frequently liked to denigrate his collaborators to create an area of competition (something very similar to what Hitler did with his ministers issuing orders that were contradictory).

He turned the ministry into a means of mass communication, massively distributing radio receivers (known as Volksempfänger, that is to say, village receiver), with “prodigious and moving” broadcasts to capture audiences and imbue it with your ideas without realizing that you are imbued with them. Our desire is to mobilize the army of public opinion. ”

WORSHIP THE LEADER

Leonard William Doob, professor of psychology at Yale University, identified 19 principles used in the manipulation of the German people, among them the cult of the leader’s personality stands out.

He proposed to adopt a single idea to repeat it ad nauseam, and to individualize the enemy until he becomes the only enemy (the adversaries must be constituted as an individualized sum). A repeated lie becomes the truth. “All propaganda must be popular, adapting its level to the least intelligent of the individuals to which it is directed … the receptive capacity of the masses is limited, their understanding scarce and they have a great facility to forget.”

In this way, any anecdote, no matter how small, can become a great threat. The most sophisticated or difficult to understand topics may go unnoticed, but small contradictions or minimal gestures turn into large topics with symbolic value. To this end, they use fragmented information that is released periodically like probes, to test their effectiveness.

Propaganda operates on pre-existing substrates: national mythology, hatred and prejudice, rooted in primitive attitudes.

The impression of unanimity, that you think “like everyone else,” helps convince many individuals. “Better a lie that cannot be denied than an implausible truth”.

In one way or another, all these principles are guessed in the profusion of almost anonymous media, which burst into our lives. Electoral campaigns, in which Goebbels demonstrated his mastery, are particularly sensitive to falling into these norms, guided by advertisers who, knowing the origin (or not knowing it), they send out test probes, encourage primitive sentiments, propagate half-truths – which are complete lies – use minimal anecdotes to build shocking news, and idealize individuals of dubious integrity.

Nothing is new. Goebbels did not invent anything, he only systematized it, embodied it and turned it into a successful model, although the very extremisms into which it fell overshadowed its effectiveness.

And yet they are there. Dimmed. Disguised. Disguised. Diluted but alive behind each news item, each slogan, each medium that exalts the cult of a politician or leader.
