With shorter days on the road, what could be better than coming home and turning on the TV? Autumn has always been the season for blockbuster TV, and with the unstoppable rise of streaming, we have even more choices. Euronews Culture here to help you narrow down your choices. Without further ado, here are our top ten must-watch shows next season.

Crown

Let’s start with what we’ve all probably been waiting for: the royal saga ends with its final season, just as King Charles opens a new one in real life. In the sixth season, Queen Elizabeth II will be played by Imelda Staunton. Previous actresses Claire Foy and Oliver Colman will return in cameo roles.

The series is said to begin with the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), and the showrunners insist that the tragic event will be treated with respect.

As you focus on the “new generation” of royals, don’t overlook young Prince William, played by Rufus Campa and Ed McVey.

Wheel of Time

After the great success of the first series, this hugely successful fantasy returns. The long-running series, based on the novels by Robert Jordan, stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, a powerful member of a magical organization, and her band of young heroes who have the power to save the world. In this episode, they will continue their quest to fulfill the prophecy and defeat the forces of evil.

Considering that there are 14 official books in the series, it is unlikely that the story will end with this series, but it is still worth a look. The journey is as important as the destination, right?

Welcome to Wrexham

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are back for more antics in charge of the third oldest professional football club in the world. In 2020, overseas players teamed up to buy the Red Dragons, a Welsh football bums club.

The camera follows them as they work to revive the team, while acknowledging that Rob and Ryan have very little experience in the world of football – or working together.

The story takes place in the working-class town of Wrexham, where fans hope to lead their favorites to glory. It’s not an easy task, but Rob and Ryan will continue to do everything they can to achieve this goal, while bringing fame and attention to the Welsh community. If an unlikely tour of the United States this summer is any indication, Wrexham are set to reach new heights.

Hot girls

If you like good dramas noir, this is something to put on the list. Created by Hans Rosenfeldt—author of the classic Scandinavian noir The Bridge—the series is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by C.J. Tudor.

In the six-episode series, Samantha Morton plays Reverend Jack Brooks, a grieving single mother. She and her teenage daughter move to a small village in search of a new beginning, but all is not as it seems. Their new home is fraught with horrors and secrets that go back centuries. It’s the perfect addition to your horror season must-see list.

All the light we can’t see

If you like period dramas, you can’t miss Steven Knight’s latest project. The creator of such unstoppable hits as Peaky Blinders has adapted Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel for this Netflix series.

The action takes place during World War II. Aria Mia Loberti takes on the role of Marie-Laure, a blind French teenager living in occupied Paris and dealing with life after the Nazi invasion.

In addition to Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie, the cast is rounded out by Louis Hofmann, who plays kind-hearted German radio technician Werner Pfennig. The four-part drama promises to be faithful to the hugely popular book it’s based on, and is probably a must-watch this year.

Love death

It seems Hollywood can’t get enough of Candy Montgomery. Last year, Jessica Biel played a homicidal Texas housewife in the Hulu series Candy, and now Elizabeth Olsen is taking on the role. In contrast to her role in the beloved Marvel series WandaVision, Olsen plays Montgomery in this series by American writer David E. Kelly.

Kelly is a prolific writer, and this seven-part series is likely to be just as popular. Released in the US in the spring, we had to wait a little longer to see it in Europe, but given Kelly’s popularity, we think this true crime series is worth the wait.

Game “Squid”: challenge

It’s hard to believe that the popular South Korean series “Squid Game” came out two years ago. Honestly, we are still working through the trauma. Proving that TV producers are willing to try anything, Netflix will see 456 real people take on Squid Games themed challenges to win a whopping $4.56 million (approx. €4.2 million): the biggest prize ever -or awarded by a reality show.

Don’t worry, the winner will get to keep the money, especially because, unlike the original show, no one will die. Early reports suggest that while the tasks won’t be life-threatening, they will be absolutely challenging. If you like ruthless strategies, unholy alliances and betrayals, this is the show for you this fall.

This is one of the most anticipated thrillers of the year, and for good reason. Starring Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, the film follows Olivia and Willa Taylor, a couple who have a seemingly perfect marriage.

Despite appearances, something is wrong. Will is having an affair and Olivia knows about it. After Will suggests a trip to some American national parks, his wife begins plotting revenge. This adaptation of B. E. Jones’s bestselling novel will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end.

Loki

Loki is returning for Season 2, and Marvel Studios fans will rejoice. The action will pick up where the first episode left off, after Tom Hiddleston’s time-traveling Loki and his friend Mobius (Owen Wilson) plunge into the multiverse.

In the last episode, they faced the chaotic aftermath created by Sylvia, one of Loki’s variants. This time they have to face even more threats, including Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majorsand an OB timeslipper in which he plays Oscar winner Ke Hai Quanin his Marvel debut.

Guilty

Heist dramas are always interesting, and this one seems to be no exception.

Starring the inimitable Gemma Arterton and Eddie Izzard, this eight-part crime comedy follows members of an elite gang of criminals as they are taken down one by one by an unknown serial killer.

Among the fun and games, we will be asked to guess who is killing the gang members and why. Could the killer be a traitor in their ranks or a mysterious enemy? We can’t wait to find out!
