Dust off those burn books and vintage 80s skirts, everyone! Finally there is a release date for the film adaptation Mean Girls: The Musical.
On October 3, Paramount announced that the highly anticipated film would hit theaters on January 12, 2024.
“January 12th is going to be SO CLEAR. New #Mean Girls The film will be released in theaters soon,” the studio wrote on Instagram.
The announcement also included a new poster featuring the classic 2004 film’s logo and a musical note placed in the middle of the word “Mean.”
Soon after the news was announced, fans took to the comments section to express their excitement.
One person wrote: “Be a loser, we’re going to the cinema.”
Another fan commented, “I’m so excited I’ve been waiting forever!”
Before the above announcement Mean Girls: The Musical The film was originally planned to be released on Paramount+.
Written by Tina Fey and directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., the upcoming film will tell the now iconic story of Cady Heron as she and her parents left their life in Kenya, Africa, for the suburbs of Chicago.
After enrolling at North Shore High School, Cady finds herself caught up in the ruthless school politics of “Girlworld”, led by the school’s power-hungry clique, the Plastics.
Sexual life of female students Star Renee Rapp, who played Regina George in the musical, is set to reprise her role in the film with Moana Auli’i Cravalho will play sarcastic art student Yanis Sarkissian.
Senior year star Anguris Rice and Strange loop Powerhouse Jaquel Spivey will also star in the film as transfer student Cady Heron and Janice’s openly gay best friend Damian Hubbard, respectively.
Jeff Richmond is the music director, Nell Benjamin is writing the lyrics, and Lorne Mihales is producing the film.
The original 2004 film, which first introduced moviegoers to “Girlworld” and its ever-changing hierarchy, starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert.
It grossed over $129 million at the box office worldwide and became a cult classic.
