‘He’s LeBron James’ – Nick Kyrgios shares his take on Novak Djokovic’s longevity; debate comparisons with Michael Jordan

Nick Kyrgios seems to have always admired Novak Djokovic, recently taking to social media to like the Serbian’s longevity, just like LeBron James.

On Wednesday, February 7, Eurosport took to Instagram to compare Djokovic to former NBA superstar Michael Jordan, comparing their longevity in their respective sports.

Hours later, Nick Kyrgios commented on the post, comparing Djokovic to LeBron James. He claims LeBron is still good at 40, while Michael Jordan stopped playing earlier and wasn’t as dominant as LeBron James is now.

“No. He’s LeBron. LeBron is still doing it at 40. Jordan stopped earlier. And it’s not that dominant,” Kyrgios said.

Richard Gasquet also responded to the article, claiming that Djokovic is an exception and that a player’s proficiency will improve over time as the Serb continues to win Grand Slams at the age of 37 decline as time passes. Gasquet agreed with the comparisons to NBA legend Michael Jordan, writing:

“One has to become less good, except for Djokovic, who won a Grand Slam at almost 37 years old. Have we ever experienced that in sports, other than Jordan?”

Six-time NBA champion and NBA Finals MVP Michael Jordan retired in 2003 at the age of 40, nearly two decades after his debut.

On the other hand, LeBron James is 39 years old and still active in the NBA. James is a four-time NBA champion and NBA Finals MVP.

Novak Djokovic will turn 37 in May. In 2023, I won the Australian Open, French Open and US Open. The world number one also reached the 2023 Wimbledon final, but was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz.

The Serbian star is currently tied with Margaret Court for the record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. Djokovic’s bid to extend his tally of Grand Slam singles titles to 25 was thwarted by Jannik Sinner in the 2024 Australian Open semi-finals, with the Italian eventually winning the Grand Slam Champion.

Serena Williams’ former coach Rick March recently claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that Djokovic will still attend many Grand Slam championship ceremonies.

The world number one is in good form for the new season, reaching the Australian Open semi-finals last month but losing 1-6, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 3-6 to the eventual Champion Jannik Sinner.

With questions raised over the Serbian’s future, March, who has always been a staunch supporter of the 36-year-old, said Novak Djokovic will not go anywhere except to attend Grand Slam championship ceremonies.

@DjokerNole isn’t going anywhere but to more Grand Slam championship ceremonies,” Macci wrote.
