How Ómicron is progressing in the world: almost a dozen countries confirmed cases of the new variant

After the World Health Organization (WHO) will rate Omicron What Variant of Concern (VOC, for its acronym in English), almost a dozen countries reported cases. In which countries were cases of infection with the Omicron variant detected?

In addition to announcing a cessation of flights with South Africa, almost a dozen countries reported their first infected with the variant:

  • Israel: the authorities decided to completely close their borders to prevent the arrival of Ómicron. In addition, they reimposed the mandatory quarantine for Israelis returning to the country (three days for the vaccinated and seven for the unvaccinated). The Ministry of Health confirmed the first two infected with this new variant (one from Malawi and the other from South Africa) and there are at least a dozen suspected cases. While citizens who come from the 50 African nations of the “red” list will have to be in isolation in hotels approved by the government and undergo Covid-19 tests.
  • Netherlands: This Sunday, the Government confirmed at least 13 cases of infected with Omicron, while warning that they are looking for some 5,000 travelers who arrived from southern Africa to test them. “The analysis is not finished yet.   • Austria: reported his first “suspected” case of infection with Omicron. This is a traveler who returned from South Africa and tested positive for Covid. They are still awaiting the results of the genomic tests.
  • Germany: the Ministry of Health confirmed this Saturday the detection of two people infected with the new variant. As they explained, these are passengers from South Africa who arrived on German soil on November 24 at the Munich airport.
  • United Kingdom: the first two cases of infection with the Omicron variant were detected in Nottingham and Chelmsford, Essex. As explained by the Secretary of Health, Sajid Javid, these infections are “connected” with a case detected in southern Africa and, to stop the possible spread, those affected were isolated along with their families pending further tests. The British Government suspended flights from Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
  • Canada: the Government confirmed this Sunday the detection of its first two cases caused by the new variant. These are two people who had been in Nigeria and were isolated in Ottawa (Ontario). “As testing and monitoring continues, other cases of this variant are expected to be found in Canada,” Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said in a statement.
