She famously sang about being in a “bad relationship” with a friend, but it looks like Taylor Swift and her ever-evolving female cast have put their drama behind them.
Taylor Swift and Sophie Turner were photographed together at a bachelorette party in New York this week, weeks after Turner and Joe Jonas announced their divorce. And if there’s one thing we love to see more than Swift, it’s her supporting a single girl during what has been dubbed the summer of celebrity breakups.
The elephant in the room here is that Swift and Turner have more in common than their single status, and that is Joe Jonas. Swift briefly dated Jonas in 2008 when she was 18 before he reportedly broke up with her during a 25-second phone call. Swift opened up about the breakup on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saying, “When I find the right person for me, he’ll be wonderful, and when I look at that person, I can’t even remember the boy who broke.” with me on the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.”
True to form, she wrote several breakup songs that fans believe are dedicated to Jonas, including “Forever & Always,” “Mr. “Perfectly Good”, “Better Than Revenge” and “The Last Kiss”. However, Swift and Jonas have long since reconciled: In 2019, she joked on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she “blew up” Jonas and they are “laughing about it now.”
For Turner, who has two children with Jonas, the breakup is much fresher. Jonas filed for divorce from Turner after five years of marriage earlier this month, which the couple confirmed in a joint statement on their Instagram accounts. “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to end our marriage amicably,” they wrote. “There is a lot of speculation as to why, but in reality this is a unanimous decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
Some social media users have suggested that Swift and Turner’s union is a rift against Jonas. One user, sharing a photo of the couple walking together with their hands tied, wrote: “It will never end for Joe Jonas.” Another echoed the sentiment, writing: “Joe Jonas’s party is over.”
Other eagle-eyed Swifties caught the similarity to a line from her 2022 hit “Vigilante S**t” that goes, “Imagine me fat as a thief with my ex-wife.”
It’s true that there’s something strangely satisfying about being friends with an ex, especially if the breakup hurt you (nothing cements a bond like a toxic ex). But it turns out that Swift and Turner’s union actually has nothing to do with Jonas, making it an even better show of girl power. Because not everything has to revolve around men, right?
Here we see an inspiring, long-term friendship where it doesn’t matter that the two women have the same ex. Swift and Turner were first photographed together in May 2019 when they appeared as guests on an episode of The Graham Norton Show. The following month Sophie told Lifestyle “She’s a very sweet girl. We’ve met a couple of times before, we (are friendly). She definitely wasn’t a fan for me… I was a fan for her!”
After Swift’s hit “Mr Perfectly Fine” was released in 2021, Turner showed her approval of it in an Instagram Story. “This is not a bop,” she wrote next to a screenshot of the song. Taylor then shared Sophie’s story with her own and added the comment “forever bend the knee to the Queen of the North,” a reference to Turner’s character from Game of Thrones.
Flashback to 10 years ago, and the picture of Swift’s friendship was completely different. In 2013, she famously feuded with Katy Perry after she allegedly tried to hire Swift’s dancers while on tour, and a public feud ensued. Some time after the fight, the female squad, which then included Gigi Hadid, Blake Lively, Karlie Kloss, Lily Aldridge and Cara Delevingne, rallied around Swift. They walked in her 1989 fashion show, hung out on the beach together and appeared at award ceremonies together.

But then there were signs that Swift’s squad was falling apart. Following her feud with Kayne West in 2015, Swift retreated from the public eye and her friendship group was seen less frequently. There have been some outpourings of support—Gigi Hadid tweeted her loyalty to Swift while modeling for West’s Yeezy campaign—but nothing on the scale of the girl team’s heyday.
A few years later, people began speculating that Swift and Kloss had split after she left the model’s name on a T-shirt despite including everyone she is known to be close with in the music video for “Look What You Made” Me Do.” ‘ Jennifer Lawrence even asked in 2018 The newspaper “New York Times interview “What’s going on with Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift?” The rumors intensified when Swift did not attend Kloss’s 2019 wedding to Josh Kasner, which was attended by her then-famous foes Katy Perry and Scooter Braun. It’s clear that Swift has moved past all the speculation surrounding her personal life and is focused on friendships that have stood the test of time. Girl groups naturally evolve over the course of twenty or thirty years, and Swift’s friendship is no exception. If anything, this once again proves that she is one of the most famous celebrities.
In a sign that all the animosity had indeed been put to rest, Swift revealed in a 2019 interview that she was on good terms with Perry but chose to keep their reconciliation low-key. Speaking about appearing in the music video with Perry, Swift said: “We were just reconnecting in private and just wanted to make sure that we were really okay and that it was very real before we let anyone know that we were.” We are not only good, but also friends again.”
