and Eli Lilly and Company Wall Street analysts say their new weight-loss drug is about to start earning tens of billions of dollars a year. That’s certainly good news for drugmakers, but it could be a disaster for the companies and government agencies prepared to foot the bill.The new drugs, called GLP-1 receptor agonists, promise to lead to weight loss of up to 20 percent and may reduce a patient’s risk of heart attack or stroke. On the surface, they are the most effective and safest weight loss pills in history.
It’s no surprise, then, that demand for these drugs is huge, and is expected to be even greater as more supply comes online and more GLP-1s receive weight loss approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
But what has received less attention is the health care crisis, as drug spending threatens to overwhelm the insurance companies, employers and government programs that buy the country’s drugs. The financial crisis could peak from 2025 (when Medicare starts covering these drugs) to 2027, when the cost of some drugs could start to fall.
