ICM meets key midwifery stakeholders in Bangladesh

In September, an ICM delegation visited Bangladesh and strengthened relationships with key midwifery and midwifery industry stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the United Nations Population Fund.

The team led by Shree Mandke, Head of Projects and Partnerships also visited Kaliakoir Upzilla Health Complex and Upzilla Sub-Centre Benupur. We were also honored to be the chief guest at a workshop on the role of midwives in preventing mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B virus organized by the National Liver Foundation of Bangladesh.

As part of ICM’s capacity building work, we co-designed and facilitated a leadership and governance workshop and a SMART advocacy workshop for executive members of the Bangladesh Midwifery Society (BMS) to build advocacy capacity among BMS and key stakeholders , to learn about SMART advocacy and how it can be used to drive change and advocate for key priorities for midwives and midwives in Bangladesh. During the workshop, participants committed to engaging key decision-makers and policy makers at local and national levels to: increase the number of midwives to improve access to midwifery services; raise awareness of the midwifery scope of midwifery practice ; Ensure a balance between nursing and midwifery roles in clinical practice and promote universal recognition of midwives and midwives.

At the end of the SMART advocacy workshop, participants had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with Ms. Maqsura Noor NDC, Director General, Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM), to discuss how to improve leadership, regulation, education, funding of midwives and midwifery services in Bangladesh and policy environment. She pledged to support the BMS and other stakeholders in advancing key issues for midwives and midwives.

The team also met representatives from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Save the Children, Bangladesh Adventist College of Nursing, BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, Cowater International, Obstetrics and Gynecology Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) and others.
