Adele’s NBA meme went viral two years ago, and this weekend, during her Las Vegas residency, the 35-year-old singer finally revealed the reasoning behind it.
This viral moment happened during the 2022 NBA All-Star Game.

“Remember that meme I made that went viral? I didn’t seem to care at all—? I want to explain that meme in more detail.”
“I know it sounds weird, but I don’t like being famous. I know I’m watching a basketball game. Yet, Rich (Paul) is running the room, you know, making small talk with the players, people.
“I’m fine. It doesn’t bother me. I’m out there looking for Michael Jordan, to be honest,” Adele told the crowd.
“So, the guy with the camera came over and asked me twice,” she continued.
“Do you mind if we film you?” they asked.
“Can we put you on the screen? I said please no. I recently canceled a residency in Las Vegas. I didn’t want to be on camera. When they came back, they filmed me.”
Adele also explained why she appeared to have filler in her lips that night.
“My lips are naturally large and I don’t need fillers,” the 16-time Grammy winner said.
“I was sulking and that’s why I looked different. I was like, ‘These assholes are back and they’re filming me without my consent.'”
Adele claimed she thought they would only play her tape “in the room” and not on TV.
“I just wanted to provide some context. Because I’ve been ignored everywhere except for looking at the camera. I’m frustrated because I asked not to be filmed. My face is also pretty meme-y. I can’t help it,” she teased .
Adele’s on-stage witty one-liners have become a signature of her Colosseum residency at Caesars Palace.
The “Hello” singer showed support for Taylor Swift during her Feb. 10 residency, claiming she makes the NFL “more fun to watch.”
In a video posted by a fan on X (formerly known as Twitter), she also defended the “I Can See You” singer against those who criticized her for participating in a contest in support of boyfriend Travis Kelce.
She even revealed who she hopes will win the 2024 Super Bowl.
In the video, Adele declares: “I think I want the Chiefs to win.” The singer’s words were met with loud cheers from the crowd.
