The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Chihuahua discloses real emergencies through the Headquarters of the Medical Services in order to have the right to use the emergency services of medical units and hospitals properly, providing adequate and timely care according to your medical requirements.

A true emergency is any urgent medical or surgical situation that threatens life or function and requires immediate attention. These include:

• Heart attack (sudden and constant chest pain)
• Acute abdominal pain with fever, vomiting and general health effects.
• Respiratory distress
• Heavy bleeding by any means
• Vaginal bleeding in pregnant women
• Sudden paralysis of any limb
• ingestion of toxic substances
• Severe burns and trauma (body fractures, partial or complete amputation)
• severe bleeding
• Severe allergic reaction (resulting in trouble breathing)
• Vomiting and persistent diarrhea with signs of severe dehydration.
• stop urinating for more than 12 hours

An emergency is a non-life-threatening situation that can be treated through an outpatient consultation or within the Continuing Medical Care module of the Unit of Family Medicine (UMF).

These include the following:

• Ingrown toenails
• knee pain
• toothache
• ear pain
• gastritis
• sprained ankle or any joint
• Menstrual cramps
• conjunctivitis (eye infection)
• low back pain (back pain)
• sore throat
• Cold without respiratory compromise
• constipate
• Gastrointestinal problems (diarrhea, vomiting)
• Migraines or tolerable pain in certain parts of the body
• First degree burns (mild)
• Mild allergic reactions
• burning sensation when urinating
• Tolerable muscle pain
• Ear inflammation with or without discharge
• Cuts and minor injuries

IMSS has a triage program, a universal classification that identifies the degree of impairment of a patient’s bodily integrity and provides timely care for beneficiaries; and improves patient care, thereby reducing wait times for emergency services.
