The director of the Venice International Film Festival told the Guardian in a recent interview: Alberto Barberawho recalls how the sci-fi film was met with lukewarm applause and “little hoots” from audiences.
“It was one of the worst performances I have ever seen; it was the only time the audience booed the film,” recalled Alberto. “Scarlett almost cried,” the Italian film critic explained.
Now it’s a cult movie
“I tried to tell her, ‘Don’t worry, in time the film will be recognized.’ And that’s exactly what happened. Now it’s a cult film.”
Under the Skin is now considered a modern classic and voted the best British film of the 21st century in MASSIVE Cinema’s 2022 Film Critics Poll.
In the 2014 film directed by Jonathan Glazer, Scarlett plays a shape-shifting alien who preys on unsuspecting men in Glasgow.
This year, the annual festival started today, Wednesday, August 30, and will last until September 9.
