“The fifth wave of coronavirus has started like lightning,” said Government spokesman Gabriel Attal in a joint interview with three French media, where infections have jumped to about 20,000 per day in a week and daily deaths average 50 o’clock.
“The increase in cases skyrocketed 80 percent in a week and the incidence rate took less than seven days to go from 100 cases to 164” per 100,000 inhabitants in the last week, Attal told Europe1, Cnews and Les Echos .
“All these elements underscore the vigor with which the epidemic has resumed,” lamented the spokesperson.
Yet Attal said that France has defense mechanisms such as the high percentage of vaccinated compared to other European countries, more than 70% of the population.
He added that the French Government is aware of the incidence when drawing up new strategies in the fight against the pandemic, in particular when the ski resorts have just opened after a fateful year 2020.
Attal said that the government proposed a rate of 200 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days as the “red line” from which new restrictions should be introduced, the Europa Press news agency reported.
“Today we are at 164 but it is most likely that we will exceed 200 in the next few days. If necessary, solutions will be sought at the local level so that these measures can be implemented in the simplest way possible, “he said.
