“Io, Captain” Venice Film Festival Liliana Cavani, film at 90 years old

There are many cinematic offerings planned at the Eden Cinema. Let’s start with the most important news – “I, Captain” (17:00 and 21:00) straight from the Venice Film Festival. Director Matteo Garrone always deserves attention and respect. The Roman director has a long series of successful films behind him that have received the approval of the public and international critics. How can we forget “Gomorrah”, “Reality”, “Dog Man” and the magnificent new version of “Pinocchio”, from which many of my colleagues came out battered. The new film tells the story of two young Senegalese and their struggles to leave their country and reach Europe. The screenwriters, in addition to Garrone, also include Massimo Gaudioso and Massimo Ceccherini. Programming continues on the first great film of the season, which we’re sure to find a winner on next Oscar night, “Oppenheimer” (5:00 and 9:00 p.m.). Directed by Christopher Nolan, the undisputed genius of cinema of recent years, starring the outstanding Cillian Murphy, who showed his best acting abilities. An excellent “talk” film that reinterprets the controversial figure of the inventor of the atomic bomb. Even more arthouse films are on offer at the multiplex on Via Cairoli. For example, the new direction of Liliana Cavani, whose ninety years was celebrated with the recent award of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and the new direction inspired by an essay by Carlo Rovelli. The Order of Time has a good cast, with Alessandro Gassman, Claudia Gerini and Edoardo Leo standing out. Despite the best intentions of the author of such wonderful films as “The Night Porter”, “Beyond Good and Evil”, “Francesco”, “Skin”, it is really difficult to regain this quality. The story of a group of friends trapped in a chalet by the sea awaiting the passage of an asteroid that could end humanity is shaky, or worse, banal.

Anyone can forgive a mistake, let alone a great director, an intellectual who is the envy of all the cinemas in the world. Programming until Sunday 10 (21:00), and on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 (17:00 and 21:00) “Blue Film” returns, the first chapter of the master Kieślowski’s color trilogy. Finally, “Jeanne DuBarry – The King’s Favorite” with Maiwenn and Johnny Depp as Louis XV (5pm to 10am Sunday).
