The Syrian Defense Ministry says its air defenses responded to an Israeli attack from the direction of the Golan
The Syrian Defense Ministry announced that the Israeli army carried out attacks at dawn on Saturday near Damascus, without immediately reporting any casualties.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that around 1.35am today, Saturday, Israeli forces carried out air strikes from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting “some points in the vicinity of the city of Damascus”.
Eyewitnesses near Damascus reported hearing explosions.
For his part, the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told Agence France-Presse that the Israeli air force bombed “Hezbollah targets” in the Sayyida Zeinab neighborhood, south of Damascus. He added that ambulances rushed to the scene after the strikes.
Since the conflict began in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, targeting targets of the Syrian army and other militias, including Lebanese Hezbollah.
Israel has intensified attacks on Syrian territory since Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7.
Israel rarely confirms that it has carried out attacks in Syria, but is repeatedly confronted with what it describes as Tehran’s attempts to establish its military presence there.
