According to AA News, production takes place in 122 swimming pools in Chakri Saltworks, 26 kilometers from the center of the region. The harvest season, which began in June, continues in the nearly 200-year-old salt basin.

Operations Manager Omer Yilmaz said that they took over the salt basin after it was privatized in 2002, and that they produce approximately 1,500 tons of spring salt annually.

Yilmaz stated that they did the production in Tuzla between June and December. “We produce on days when the weather is sunny. We have to stop production after rain and snow fall.” He said.

Yilmaz stated that the extracted salt can be used directly in food without any processing. “You cannot use salts with a sodium chloride value of less than 97 percent in food. Salts with a sodium chloride value of less than 97 percent are used for industrial consumption.” He said.

Yilmaz confirmed that they produce salt in natural ways, and said:

“Our salt mostly goes to the local market. We have difficulty meeting demand when production capacity is low. We also send it to Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Russia, UAE and Sudan. Famous chefs and well-known companies buy salt from us. Our production “Since it is natural, the water capacity is important. When we increase the number of swimming pools, we may not be able to find enough water.”

Yilmaz explained that the maximum salt production rose to 4,400 tons per year in the most productive year in the 1970s. “Since salt is completely natural and a specific product, it creates more demand. When people are looking for a more natural and pure product, they somehow reach for these products.”

He said.

Yilmaz added that they constantly analyze their products and that their mineral value is very good.
