It’s Always Sunny’s Rob McElhenney reveals multiple developmental disorder diagnosis: ‘You are not alone’

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney shares an update on his mental health. The star is noted for being part of the main cast of the series, which also includes Paddy’s Pub co-owner Ronald “Mac” McDonald, as well as Danny DeVito, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and Kaitlin Olsen. McElhenney is also the creator of FX’s long-running comedy, which is currently airing season 16 on FXX.

On Twitter, McElhenney shared a personal update, revealing that he was “recently diagnosed with multiple neurodevelopmental disorders and learning disabilities.”

While she says that “it’s not something I would normally talk about publicly,” she was eager to share her diagnosis to remind others that “you are not alone. You’re not stupid. You’re not bad'”. He also announced that he will be giving listeners an update on his full diagnosis on an upcoming episode of The Always Sunny Podcast, which he will co-host with It’s Always Sunny cast members Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton.

With this post, McElhenney joins a larger movement to promote mental health awareness and end mental illness. Over the past few years, more and more celebrities have been sharing honest updates about their mental health. One of the most infamous incidents was when pop superstar Shawn Mendes canceled the rest of his 2022 tour last July, saying he needed to “hit the ground running and come back stronger”.

McElhenney’s announcement coincides with a new breakthrough in his career, which will help spread his message even further. In addition to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 16, McElhenney also starred in the popular documentary Welcome to Wrexham alongside Ryan Reynolds. The series follows the pair as they buy and attempt to rehabilitate a struggling football club in Wales.

Welcome to Wrexham is already set to return for season two. Additionally, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been renewed which will give the series 17 and 18 seasons. Considering the fact that Wrexham represents McElhenney’s real life and one of Sunny’s main creative forces, he could take advantage of the opportunity to continue this mental health discussion in one or both series, with Its social media.
