Cefazolin is an injectable form of antibiotic used to fight a variety of bacteria that cause infections of the respiratory tract, skin, bones, joints, genitals, and urinary tract, among others. It belongs to the cephalosporin class.
The dose and timing of this antibiotic depends on the problem being treated and must be directed by your doctor. Cefazolin can be injected into a muscle or into a vein, in both cases it must be administered by a health professional.
Cefazolin is available in powder form as a 1 gram and 2 gram injectable solution.
Cefazolin is used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
In addition, this antibiotic can be used as a preventive measure before, during, and after surgery to avoid infection.
How it is used depends on the infection being prevented or treated and on the doctor’s instructions, and varies between adults and children, as follows:
Depending on the problem being treated, the dose of cefazolin for adults is:
In older adults, antibiotic dose readjustment may be required based on renal function and must be calculated by the treating physician. The dosage for adults should not exceed 6 grams per day.
The dose of cefazolin for children over 1 month and under 12 years, depending on the problem to be treated, is:
For children under 1 month, the usual indicated dose is 20 mg/kg body weight intravenously every 8 or 12 hours or as directed by a physician.
Cefazolin can cause some side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain at the injection site, and rash. Likewise, inflammation of the veins and fungal infections of the mouth may also be present.
Also, in some people, cefazolin may cause a serious allergic reaction, or anaphylaxis, that requires immediate medical attention. If this is the case, treatment should be interrupted, especially if symptoms such as difficulty breathing, cough, chest pain, swelling of the mouth, tongue, or face, and hives develop. Learn how to recognize all the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Cefazolin should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women, or in patients with colitis or kidney failure without a doctor’s order.
This antibiotic is also contraindicated in persons allergic to cefazolin, cephalosporins, or other ingredients in the formulation. You should also tell your doctor if you have a mild allergic reaction to penicillin or other similar antibiotics.
Also, people who take blood thinners like warfarin and heparin should tell their treating doctor before taking cefazolin.
