In his interview with the publication Today’s Hoda Kotb, which airs in its entirety on October 13, Jada, 52, announced that she and her husband WilL separated in 2016. However, they remained a united front and attended events together and did not officially break up.

When asked why they didn’t divorce, she replied: “I think I’m just not ready yet, still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in a partnership and as far as how do we present this to people? I didn’t come up with that.”

“Why he broke is a lot,” she said when asked why they ended their marriage, which began in 1997. The couple share children Jayden, 25, and Willow, 22.

“I think by 2016 we were just tired of trying. I think we’re both stuck in our fantasies of what we think the other person should be like.”

At the 2022 Oscars, Will stormed the stage after Chris, who appeared to present an award, joked about Jada’s alopecia, which she was diagnosed with a few years ago.

Was Jada Pinkett Smith offended by Chris Rock’s joke?

“Chris looks at me and says, ‘Jada, I didn’t mean any harm.'” Jada recounted to Hoda the moments immediately after the attack.

In her book, she details her mental health struggles and diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, with her maternal grandmother and parents who were drug addicts and violent.

Her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, was a heroin addict and is now sober and hosts Red Table Talk with Jada and Jada’s daughter Willow. Her father, Robsol, was known to be cruel and was in and out of her life throughout her childhood. He died in 2010.

She attended a performing arts school, but despite a promising career, she began dealing drugs. “Growing up, the drug dealers were the ones with the wealth,” she said.

Jada began selling crack cocaine and admitted that it was inevitable in her area at the time.

“You could use them, you could sell them, but there was no one in that environment, and drugs don’t touch you. And I’m certainly not saying that’s right when you’re in a completely different mindset now. But when you live in a war zone and you only think about survival, I didn’t try to use drugs. I certainly didn’t want to be a drug dealer’s girlfriend. But I needed money so I could be independent. I wanted to take care of myself.”

While neither Willow nor her brother have said anything publicly about their mom’s memoir, including her revelation about Will and Jada’s split, Willow shared a revealing and cryptic quote on her Instagram Stories.
