I don’t see Maiwenn’s film as a controversial choice at all, because if Johnny Depp had been banned from working it would have been different, but that’s not the case. We only know one thing and the justice system has already spoken. I think he won the lawsuit and by the way, the film is not about Johnny Depp.

Also Maiwenn he had to deal with some legal problems. She was recently sued by a magazine editor for alleged assault at a restaurant. Fremaux notes that the lawsuit didn’t affect how the film was held out of competition at Cannes, as that was already the plan before the news broke: “We were unaware of anything, we didn’t know when we invited Jeanne du Barry out of competition”.
