No Hard Feelings is about to set the box office record for the decade. Directed by Gene Stupnitsky, the film is an R-rated comedy that hit theaters on June 23rd. It follows a young woman named Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) who makes a deal with a married couple to date their 19-year-old son Percy (Andrew Bart Feldman) in exchange for a used car.
According to Collider, “No Hurts” hit a major milestone at the worldwide box office. Its worldwide gross is currently over $50 million, of which $20 million from international markets supports $31 million of domestic gross. The film should now be the highest-grossing R-rated original comedy of the decade and the highest since Stupnitsky also directed The Good Boys in 2019.
The success of No Hard Feelings was the beginning of an extraordinarily rich series of R-rated comedies for the modern era. The films to be revealed after could also draw audiences at the box office, as well as the No Grievances cast and compelling and controversial storyline. Among them is the July 7 release of The Joyful Ride, a comedy about a whirlwind trip to China, starring Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu for All Around The Same Time, alongside Sherri Cola and Ashley Park.
This movie will be followed by the release of Strays on August 18th. The film follows a group of talking dogs on a brutal mission, interspersed with crude jokes about sex, drugs, and other topics unusual for an anthropomorphic animal film. The cast is full of stars, including Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Will Forte, Isla Fisher, Randall Park, Josh Gad and Sofia Vergara.
It is not yet known whether any of the films will be able to compete with No Offense. If they do, perhaps an R-rated comedy renaissance is coming. If not, it may take a few more Stupnitsky blockbusters in the next few years to get things started.
