Jerry Seinfeld loves Phyllis’ energy.

“What do you hate more: watching the Mets lose or watching the Phillies win?” I asked Jerry Seinfeld over the phone a few days before his Oct. 6 performance at the Met.

Seinfeld just wrapped work on an upcoming Netflix film. Unfrosted: The Story of a Pop Tart, which he led; starring Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer. And he’s very happy to be back on stage; “It’s a lot of fun, but making films is a very quiet business,” he said, “everyone always says, ‘Quiet!’ on the set. And working all day in silence is not what stand-up comedians like. We like noise, sounds and screams.”

Unsurprisingly, the comedian, a Mets fan, “loved the way Bryce Harper stormed the third base line last week to yell at umpire Angel Hernandez. It was like that in Philadelphia, it was so cool.”

But have I ever heard a Mets fan praise the Phillies? Is there any competition at all?

“I don’t think so. I don’t know what happened to him,” Seinfeld said, attributing the antagonism to Phillies second baseman Juan Samuel, who played for the team from 1983 to 1989 and who “kind of provoked people at the game.”

“But these things can always catch fire at any moment, it’s all about strange personalities.”

At this moment I had to raise Seinfeld episode entitled “Boyfriend” featuring New York Mets player Keith Hernandez in the Mets vs. Phillies game. “At the time it seemed like a classic rivalry. I don’t know if any of that remains today,” Seinfeld said, before I reminded him of the time last year when Hernandez famously said he hated watching the Phillies.

“As soon as my team is eliminated, I just pick another team. I base that on just watching them play,” he said.

On-field rivalries aside, Seinfeld loves a “Northeastern approach and Northeastern humor.”

“My friend Kevin Hart always tells me, ‘If they make you laugh in Philadelphia, you’ll go anywhere.’ Of course it’s a New York cliché, but I think it’s also true in Philadelphia. Their audience is very discerning and they know their stuff.”

He didn’t look Seinfeld-inspired It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (“I don’t watch much TV”) and doesn’t know this word to yawn (“This is very similar to Seinfeld – it can mean almost everything, and it can also mean nothing, I say) but in Philadelphia, Seinfeld loves to drive around. (Unsurprisingly, this is coming from someone who hosted a very informative series, Comedians in cars drinking coffee.) And then he eats.

“Philadelphia has the best food,” he said. “I think Philadelphia and Chicago are the best food cities I go to. Someone will always recommend something I haven’t heard of, some gyros sandwich place or something like that. And I love doing it.”

Maybe it’s because he’s playing a concert this week and wants to connect with the locals. But when we finished talking, Seinfeld concluded with even more praise for our team. “I like the Phillies this year. They are exciting – great energy!”
