At the WWE Fastlane press conference, John Cena was asked about his own hypocrisy during his former feud with fellow wrestler-turned-Hollywood actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Cena said his differences with Johnson stemmed from his anger over Johnson leaving the WWE to become an A-list Hollywood actor, a career move that Cena later made himself. In May, Cena admitted that he was “short-sighted and selfish” in his feud with Johnson, and now he has told the press that “I 100% see and understand” how people could see him as a hypocrite for calling out Johnson and then followed in his footsteps. .
“If you’ve been following what I’ve been trying to do, especially recently publicly and personally with Dwayne Johnson, I’ve stated that even though I thought I was trying to do what’s best for the business,” Cena said of starting the feud. “I took the wrong path. I violated his trust and made statements about his point of view that I knew nothing about. And deep down I was a fan. I wanted to bring The Rock back (to WWE). “I wanted to do anything to bring The Rock back, but I did it wrong.”
Cena continued, “I did it disrespectfully, so I had to eat some crow. I had to say, “I’m really sorry, but I was wrong,” because I’m really sorry and I was wrong, and it’s a very humiliating experience. Dwayne is one hell of a guy… I became the one I despised. I see this perspective and understand it. It was a great learning experience from my mistake of feuding with The Rock.”
With his Hollywood career currently on hold due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, Cena decided to once again return to the world of WWE for the Fastlane event. When asked if Hollywood plans to take him away from WWE once the strike is resolved, Cena replied: “Yes. They make.”
“I made it very clear that you can’t do both because of the liability insurance,” Cena explained. “If I tried to do both, it would be very selfish, because if something happened to me, I would put a lot of people in the movie business out of work.”
“I stopped the project in the middle (of the strike) and cannot talk about it because of the strike we are in,” he added. “We are in the middle of this process. As soon as we get back to work, we’ll get back to work. I don’t control any of this. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping we can find a solution that suits everyone. At this point, I think this is the best way to help… get home to my family.”
