Michael Jordan’s journey, first as a player and then as a businessman/philanthropist, has been an impressive one. Welcome to Daily Dirt Volume 841 Three thoughts for today.
1. Jordan seems to be around forever. First, as a college basketball phenom, and then as the face of the NBA. Interestingly, Jordan, who will turn 61 in February this year, is as famous in the business world as he is on the basketball court.
According to Forbes magazine, Jordan is now worth $3 billion. Yes, it has a “b” in it.
Most of his bank account has been there since he started playing. Jordan’s NBA salary was “only” $90 million, $63 million of which came from his final years as an active player. In his 15-year NBA career, Jordan only twice became the highest-paid player in the league. This is a little crazy.
For much of his post-playing career, wealth has been built through endorsements and savvy business ventures.
Jordan is the world’s first athlete billionaire, and he is also a philanthropist. Last year, he donated $10 million to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, $7 million to open two medical clinics in Charlotte, N.C., donated millions to food banks in Chicago and the Carolinas, and was a hurricane A major supporter of disaster relief efforts. He also pledged more than $100 million in funding to organizations working for “racial quality, social justice and greater access to education.”
Jordan also indulged himself. He enjoyed gambling, buying mansions and splurging on other luxuries. He even built his own golf course.
What is at the core of Jordan’s continued success? Those Nike Air Jordans. Yes, they are still around and more popular than ever. Currently, Nike’s Jordan brand alone brings in approximately $3.6 billion in annual revenue.
What does this tell us? Never, ever underestimate the power of the jump shot.
2. A few days ago, I received a message from a reader asking when the next issue of “The Makings of Chuck Norris” would appear on Daily Dirt.
Ask and you will receive. Here are the latest happenings in the world of Chuck Norris:
3. Every day we get closer to spring training. Here are some baseball ideas for those cold winter days:

Glad I’m not a Philadelphia Eagles fan. What happened these past few months?
Steve Eisinger writes daily for the Mud River News. Did you know that a pair of original 1985 Air Jordan 1s can have a resale value ranging from $3,500 to over $25,000, depending on size, condition and color?
