Together with local artists RNK, “Zhot” and “Brote”, León’s Youth Academy will create two new murals in the city, one in memory of singer-songwriter José Alfredo Jimenez Jiménez), and another will commemorate the “Sombra” about the 1950s Leon fighter.
The fresco dedicated to the so-called “Son of the People” will be performed at the Mercado 16 de Septiembre, while the fresco of “The Shadow” will be performed at the Mercado República.

According to Eduardo Camarena Saavedra, IMJU’s urban creative director, businessmen from the Republic Market had met the fighter’s relatives since they lived in the area and asked to pay tribute to him.
Ismael Zuñiga, director of IMJU, noted that this is another artistic intervention that will take place in the city’s five markets.
“This project of market murals is very important because it also seeks to activate the economy of each market, which we reached after the success of one of Guillermo del Toro’s markets and the direction of the corresponding market. What is the goal ? to capture something attractive and at the same time along with the education we are forging the cultural line, so we will give the murals movement,” he explained.
In an exclusive interview online news broadcast“Zhot” shared that he is currently investigating the character of Leon so that he can start with the design of the mural.
These are the second and third murals by Zhot and Brote; the first is the Mercado Metropolitano, where they filmed part of the work of filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.

Who is Sombra?
Alejandro Cruz Ortiz, better known as “Sombra,” from Leon, Guanajuato, was a boxer who excelled at the crux of the sport .
Heiying learned the shoe business in the city from a young age, and it is said that he also worked as a worker and farmer before entering the art of wrestling.
Considered the first Mexican aerial style wrestler, he was on good terms with the Blue Demon and lost the Mask to Santo in 1953 in one of the most epic fights in history.
Inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2001, Sombra died of pneumonia on March 8, 2007 at the age of 85.
