In an interview with “Antesala Deportiva” by Emisoras Unidas, famous Guatemalan walker José Barrondo shares his views and feelings as he prepares for the challenge of the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Barondo’s tour date is set for Monday 13th August as he begins a new chapter in his successful career. After arriving in Budapest on Tuesday, the athlete has a clear strategy in place to optimize his performance in the men’s 20km race walk on Saturday 19 August. Before the game, Barrondo plans to load and maintain his legs to ensure that he is in the best condition.
“Aiming for the best means aiming for medals. I think if we beat 1 hour and 19 minutes, we will have a chance to be among the best in the world.” Barondo emphasized his ambitions for the title.

Barrondo faces hurdle with COG suspension
The 26-year-old Barrondo faced an additional challenge in his career as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG). However, the situation hasn’t dampened his motivation or his focus on international competition. “Anyone’s motivation should come from the obstacles they face. We often face them in a negative light, but it shouldn’t be. Despite the COG being suspended, I wondered if I would be able to play after reaching the score. As an athlete, I have to achieve my goals. This year, I worked hard to reach my goals and focused on being one of the best, and I did,” shared Barondo firmly.
Barondo is currently ranked 22nd in the world out of 50 World Cup entrants and is destined to be one to watch in Budapest. He said with gratitude and enthusiasm: “It is a great emotion. Along with happiness comes great responsibility. Not only do I want to compete, but I have to give my best and fight for the medal.”

Beyond personal glory, Barondo has an additional drive: to provide a better quality of life for his family. “Positive results can improve the quality of life of my family, which is why I always try my best. Although I have experienced failures, the most important thing is to continue to stand up with the fantasy of winning the world championship.” Barondo concluded , highlighting his perseverance and indestructible spirit.
