Justin Bieber has revolutionized social networks with a look with which he wants to make dreadlocks fashionable again. The artist has wanted to share with his millions of Instagram followers his new hairstyle with which he seems to be delighted, with several publications – one of them with his wife Hailey – in which he shows the versatility of his new style.
However, this bet of the 27-year-old has generated a great controversy. While some fans have approved the return of the dreadlocks, others have accused him of cultural appropriation and have not hesitated to criticize him both on Instagram and on Twitter.
“J, please find out about cultural appropriation … You shouldn’t be wearing dreadlocks” or “Didn’t you say you were educating yourself about black culture? So what’s this nonsense?” are just some of the comments that can be read on these platforms.
It is not the first time that Bieber has been accused of cultural appropriation. In 2016 he already surprised his fans with his hair full of dreadlocks. This hairstyle is traditionally related to African-American culture, hence the singer received criticism five years ago and receives it again now, especially from his black followers who consider the hairstyle to be disrespectful and offensive.
The interpreter of ‘Peaches’, far from calming these fans, has fueled the controversy with a whole declaration of intent that has even more enraged the community. “My style, from how I sing to how I act or dress, is influenced by black culture. I am committed to using my networks to learn and speak about racial injustice and systemic oppression,” he pointed out.
My style, from how I sing to how I act or dress, is influenced by black culture. “
The American artist has not been the only one who has had to face this type of accusation. The sisters Kendall jenner and Kim Kardashian or Rihanna are some of the celebrities who in recent years have generated controversy with their hairstyles and outfits.
