Fresh off starring in the second season of Netflix’s “Full Swing,” Justin Thomas headed to New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater to chat with Late Night host Stephen Colbert .
But instead of focusing on Full Swing or the Ryder Cup, Colbert wanted Thomas to talk about his first experience playing golf with Michael Jordan.
Thomas’ story about the six-time NBA champion did not disappoint.
“He always came to the Kentucky Derby and I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. So he loved golf – he did and still does – and he wanted to play golf when he was in town. He had a His friend who played in the NBA with him, Junior Bridgeman, he was friends with my dad and connected them. So he would come out and play my dad’s court.”
Bridgeman, of course, played for the University of Louisville under legendary coach Danny Crum. He later played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers and served as president of the NBA Players Association in the late 1980s.
Later, he accumulated huge wealth through various business ventures. He also became a member of the PGA of America Board of Directors in 2008, the same year Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville hosted the Ryder Cup. This May, Valhalla will host the PGA Championship for the fourth time.
So when Bridgeman and Jordan played with young Thomas at his father’s course in Kentucky, they both had plenty of cash. They also enjoy playing money games on the court.
“(Jordan) always called me little guy, so he said to me, ‘Little guy, go get your clubs and you’re going to play the last seven holes with us,” Thomas said.
“He knew I played golf, but he didn’t know I was decent, and neither did anyone else. So (Jordan) said, ‘I’ll take the little guys and serve whoever wants us.’ “Of course, everyone is paying attention to this 111-pound kid.”
Thomas later said he felt “enough pressure” playing with Jordan, but that didn’t stop him from making four birdies and playing seven holes.
“That helped me pay for my first car,” Thomas joked.
“I don’t know how much (we played for). (Jordan) told everyone not to tell me how much it was because (I would freak out). But I probably won three or four big bucks. “It’s a funny story. “
