Still shocked after learning tennis Simona Halep banned for four years After testing positive for roxadustata substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Halep’s sanctions have caused some controversy in the tennis world There was a dispute between those who defended Halep’s innocence and those who made accusations against the Romanian after learning of the punishment, as Serena Williams lost to Halep in the 2019 Wimbledon final.
Maria Sakkari, a Greek tennis player competing in a tournament in San Diego this week, used Halep’s case to protest apps used by tennis players to target users, exposing themselves to possible control. “The only thing I can say is the way they handle every situation with any player is horrific. We’re going to get to the point where they won’t let us take electrolytes. I’ve never been in that position and I don’t want to be in that position. I’m very careful about everything to do with supplements, but I had no idea what the process looked like or how things worked behind the scenes. I don’t know who has a voice, I don’t know… This will certainly improve whereabouts enforcement before anti-doping enforcement. It does not work well. I should remind you every day, but I don’t. They tried to improve it, but it didn’t work very well. We travel a lot more than other athletes. A lot of pressure. I get up every night to go to the bathroom, but if it’s close to check-in time I’m like: ‘Am I going to go?’ I dont go? Should I wait for them to come? A lot of pressure”.
Sakkari’s comments did not go down well with tennis players like Nick Kyrgios, who responded with a tweet in which he asked tennis players to compete without the need for supplements. “Uh uh uh, not really, hahaha. I played five sets with bananas and coke and my record speaks for itself. Maybe tennis players should stop doing shady things. They should act like that at the end of the day Look in the mirror and say “Yes, I did the right thing. “It’s not that difficult.”
Kyrgios’ response didn’t end there, as the Australian responded to a user who criticized his comments despite not winning a major title. “I think if I had a similar penalty for four years, I would have won five Grand Slams.”
