La Palma: a new lava flow destroys everything in its path | It has already reached a cemetery and a photovoltaic plant

Lava flowing from the volcano from the Spanish island of The Palm created this Thursday a new wash that reached a cemetery and a photovoltaic plant, in an area of scattered hamlets and farmlands.

The new river of molten rock emerged early in the morning and runs parallel to the tenth stream of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which has erupted since September 19, according to the technical director of the Special Plan for Protection against Volcanic Risk of the Canary Islands. (Pevolca), Miguel Ángel Morcuende.

According to the same official it constitutes “bad news” because it runs through areas “not trampled” previously by lava and is destroying what it finds in its path.

“It surpassed the Las Manchas cemetery, it ran quite quickly in the early hours of the day, although now it is becoming more viscous due to the amount of material it is harboring after passing through more populated areas,” Morcuende added.

The speed in the early afternoon was 25 meters per hour: “It is worrying because it is in an area where there is a lot of urbanization and it is an area with a steep slope“, he specified.

Under Scrutiny

Scientists and technicians monitoring the magma river found an increase in emissions and an increase in lava channels and overflows and, in fact, they registered a sudden increase in the emission of lava from the center of the volcano “very spectacular”, although it has already ceased, an expected behavior in a Strombolian eruption.

The seismicity that causes the phenomenon continues to be low at intermediate levels and the deep has diminished. The largest earthquake recorded on the day, 3.9, was located 11 kilometers from the surface.

The emission of sulfur dioxide associated with the volcanic plume, however, is still very high, around 30,000 tons, but with a downward trend since September 23, when it exceeded 50,000 tons.

Regarding air quality, In the last twenty-four hours, a high quantity of gases has been detected over the areas of Las Manchas and La Bombilla, in the exclusion zone, while the situation is good or reasonably good throughout the island and regular in Los Llanos de Aridane, where the daily thresholds for suspended particles of less than 10 microns have been exceeded.

Affected territory

Currently, the area affected by magma amounts to 1,084.44 hectares and the width between castings has increased to 3,350 meters.

According to the latest data, there are 1,484 buildings affected, of which 1,195 are for residential use, 160 agricultural and 67 industrial.

The damaged crops occupy an area of 340.59 hectares, of which more than half are banana trees, and exceed 400 hectares if those affected by the ash are added, so the damage to agriculture is considerable.
