Lady Gaga attends the 2022 EE British Academy Film Awards at the Royal Albert Hall on March 13, 2022 in London, England.
Ever since Lady Gaga burst onto the music scene, she’s never been afraid to take risks. Gaga, born Stefani Joan Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986 in New York City, described her school life as “very dedicated, very studious, very disciplined” but at the same time “a little insecure.” She considered herself a failure and was ridiculed for being “too provocative or too eccentric.” The pop star began playing the piano at age four when her mother insisted she become a “cultured young woman.” She took piano lessons and practiced throughout her childhood. The lessons taught her how to create music by ear, which Gaga preferred to reading music. Her parents encouraged her to take up music and enrolled her in a creative arts camp.
As a teenager, Lady Gaga played at open mic nights. She also studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute for ten years. She later said about her penchant for music: “I don’t know exactly where my passion for music came from, but it’s what comes easiest to me. When I was about three years old, maybe even younger, my mom always tells this really awkward story about how I stood and played the keys like that because I was too young and short to get to that.” Admitting that she was not a natural dancer, Gaga stated: “But I am a natural musician. I believe that’s what I’m best at.”
In 2006, Gaga began working with producer Rob Fusari, whom she began dating that same year. He helped her develop songs and claimed to be the first person to call her “Lady Gaga”, after the Queen song “Radio Ga Ga”.
